Keene School District Internet Safety and Computer Network Policy

The Network/Internet is provided for the students and staff to promote educational excellence in our schools through resource sharing, innovation and communication.  Access to Network/Internet services will be provided to users who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner consistent with the educational mission of Benjamin Franklin Elementary School.  

You are responsible for using the Network/Internet only in the presence of staff or teachers and according to the following Network Citizen Rules that are listed below.

Network Citizenship Rules

1. Use all computers carefully and courteously
•    Touch the keys softly and with clean hands
•    Handle the mouse gently
•    Do not touch the screen
•    Do not change the settings or control panel
•    Do not attempt to gain access to the File Server or any unauthorized computer
•    Do not deliberately disrupt the computer network or damage equipment

2. Use school software on school computers and use it properly
•    Place CDs in the computer according to classroom rules
•    Follow the program directions and ask for help when needed
•    Report any CD problems to your teacher
•    Do not load programs from an outside source
•    Do not copy any school programs for other uses

3. Respect the privacy of others
•    Do not log in under another student’s account
•    Do not open, copy or change a folder or file that does not belong to you.

4. Use the Internet and any other computer resource for educational purposes only

5. While accessing the Internet you must conform to any additional site restrictions that may be in effect.  A user may not:
•    Send, display, or receive offensive messages, pictures or other media which is defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane or sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, or offensive to human dignity
•    Send, display, or receive hate mail, discriminatory or other antisocial remarks, or other information which is intended to harass
•    Employ the network for commercial purposes
•    Access the Network/Internet to play non-educational games, access personal e-mail, or for other nonacademic activities
•    Participate in any type of teleconferencing, blogging or chat without the permission of instructional staff

6. Users should be aware that there are people on the Network/Internet who cannot be trusted.  Many people on the Internet pretend to be someone that they are not.  Please be aware that this kind of deception is widespread and common.  So that you do not become a victim, you should following these rules:
•    Do not reveal your personal address or phone number or those of other people
•    Do not use another’s password
•    There is no such thing as privacy on the Network/Internet.  Someone else is always listening so do not share personal information that you might not want strangers to know about.  Never send or keep anything that you would not mind seeing in the daily newspaper
•    Do not share personal information with friends who might carelessly share it with a stranger on the Network/Internet

It is the student’s responsibility to abide by all rules set forth in this policy.  Violation will result in immediate loss of access and will be referred to the principal for other disciplinary or legal action.  


Playground Expectations

For consistency in enforcement, parents are asked to follow these expectations if on the playground during non-school hours or on non-school days.

Common Language:

•    Circle up ...three short whistles, raised hand, “circle up”
•    (Students are in a circle, including the teacher;  “huddle up” means to come in closer for further instruction.)
•    Long whistle or bell... line up.
•    Students will report any concerns on the playground to the supervisor on duty.

Expectations:

1.   Front door:
•    Keep area in front of doorway clear; hop scotch is OK
•    Students may sit (not stand) on the garden wall.

2.   Bench area
•    This area is for reading and quiet games.
•    Show respect for the gardens.  This is a tribute to families including Mike White and his son.  (Mike is a former principal; his son died suddenly and unexpectedly.)
    
3.  Blacktop
•    Walk on the blacktop; no running.
•    Boundaries include fence and tree line by Greenlawn St.  
•    Also, students need to stay off the blacktop sidewalk that goes to the Washington St. gate.
•    Students need to stay away from the bike racks;  tree line by the the Washington St. bike rack is a boundary.
•    Do not climb the fence.

4.  Basketball hoop:
•    Use purple or orange basketball.
•    No running around blacktop.
•    Shoot and pass.
•    Return equipment to bucket when done. Bucket is to be kept near the quiet bench area.

5.  Four-square:
•    Hit ball underhanded.
•    Line up on line; enter in square A; D serves.
•    Everyone gets a chance to play.
•    Ball lands on outside line; fair play.
•    Ball lands on inside line; do over if there is a dispute.

6.  Big Toy area:
•    Play in the sand or on the Big Toy; no tag or running games.
•    Play shell theater:
            1.  one child per step
            2.  can somersault or jump off bottom 4 steps; top 3 -- no jumping or somersaults
•    Wavy bars:
            1.  start on wooden part
            2.  hand over hand
            3.  one child at a time
•    Suspension bridge:
            1.  stay out from under the bridge
•    Spiral down:
            1.  OK to go up or down--- just look out for others
•    Slides:
            1.  sit, slide on bottom
            2.  don’t walk up
            3.  don’t hog the bottom
•    Rings:
            1.  start on the Washington St. side
            2.  2nd child starts when the 1st is half way
•    Ropes:
            1.  don’t put head, arms, legs through ropes
   
7.  Other equipment:
•    Swings:               
            1.  face playground         
            2.  no jumping off             
            3.  spectators stand back   

•    Spiral slide:
1.   students leave a step when climbing the ladder
2.   one person down slide at a time   
       
•    Monkey bars:
            1. travel west to east on parallel bars
            2. No standing on the high bars
           
    8.  Grassy area near school:
•    Area for running games (not on tar area).
   
    9.  Field:
•    Organized games or running games.   

10.    Twigwams:
•    A quiet place to visit with friends.
•    Walk

11.  Lining up on the playground:
•    Line up by  homeroom.
•    Remember self-space.
•    Wait quietly; make a silent transition into the building.
•    Give students (who need one) a reminder that recess is almost over.

Care of playground equipment:
•    If the ball goes over the fence, tell a teacher.
•    Students can not go after a ball.
•    Teachers may get if they can supervise the playground appropriately.
•    Students can not go under cars in the parking lot to get balls.
•    Please report to the office balls that have left playground.
•    Always return playground equipment to the bucket.

When students don’t follow the expectations:
•    The teachers will give a reminder.
•    Students will practice the expectation.
•    Students will be required to play a different activity.
•    Students take a break on the wall.
•    An office referral will be made.

These expectations will be reviewed and up-dated upon completion of soccer field, walking track, etc.


Playground Winter Expectations

The following additional expectations are for the playground in the winter:
Clothing
• Students need to be dressed in the clothing they bring to school when they go outside for recesses.  This should include:            boots
                    ear covering
                    mittens                                                    jacket
                    snow pants
• In order to play on the field, in the snow, students need to have on ALL of the above items.
• Students who do not have on any of the above items will need to remain on the black top.
• Students who do not have on boots, will remain on the dry black top which may be near the building wall.
• Sweatshirts, etc. that are worn as jackets, need to be taken off when inside.

General Expectations:
• There will be no sliding on ice.
• There will be no throwing of ice or snow.
• There will be no climbing of snow banks, except in designated, announced areas.
• There will be no playing of ‘king of the mountain.’
• There will be no tunneling in the snow banks.
• Be sure to keep tongues in mouths, not on metal!

Equipment:
• Equipment with ice on or under it will be off limits until the snow has melted.

Field:
• Students may build snowmen or snow forts.
• Students need to be understanding of other students’ projects; however, no one ‘owns’ work -in-progress and all grade levels may participate in the construction of projects.  Students should tear down only the parts they have built.
• Students can body slide on designated snow banks on the field area.  This can only be done with teacher supervision.  Students need to take turns, one at a time, as in using the slide.  Students must slide on their bottoms they same as they do with a slide.

Blacktop:
• The expectations are the same as in the summer for the blacktop.
• Remember, students withou boots need to stay on the dry area.
