January 22, 2010
Dear Parents,
I’d like to share with you a few quick reminders today. First, please be sure if your child walks to school or if you drive your student to school that they do not arrive before 8:20. This rule is for your child’s safety, as the school does not provide supervision before 8:20 and your attention to this is greatly appreciated.
Second, there are two important meetings scheduled the next two months that affect your child's education:
- February 6, 2010 FIRST SESSION OF THE ANNUAL KEENE SCHOOL DISTRICT MEETING, 9 a.m., Keene High School auditorium. Only registered voters can attend and vote. It is at this meeting that amendments can be made to the proposed budget for the 2010-2011 school year. You may register to vote in the City Clerk's office at City Hall any business day from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. To register, you must show proof of age and street address. Registration closes on Tuesday Jan. 26 at a special session from 7-7:30 p.m. in the City Clerk's office at City Hall.
- March 9, 2010 SECOND SESSION VOTE AT THE POLLS - The proposed budget and two labor agreements with the districts' principals, supervisors and tutors will on the ballot. Wards 1, 2 & 3 vote at the Keene Recreation Center, 312 Washington Street, and Wards 4 & 5 vote at the First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Avenue. Polls are open from 7:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. Same day voter registration is available.
Third, in the coming weeks and months I plan to share with you in my parent notices excerpts from “Developing Your Child’s Habits of Success in School, Life and Work” by Arthur L. Costa, Professor Emeritus at California State University. There are thirteen habits that Dr. Costa advocates all parents work to develop in their children to increase their chances for future success, something we all want for all of our children. The thirteen habits are: persisting, managing impulsivity, listening to others with understanding and empathy, thinking flexibly, thinking about one’s thinking, striving for accuracy and precision, questioning and problem posing, applying past knowledge to new situations, thinking and communicating with clarity and precision, gathering data through all one’s senses; ingenuity, originality, insightfulness: creativity; responding with wonderment and awe, and modeling. Look for more information in coming notices and on Franklin’s website at: http://franklin.keene.k12.nh.us.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
William W. Harris
